TIRANA, Dec. 8 – Police reported that Nazmi Hyka, alleged author of the January 2004 tragedy in Vlora where 21 persons died in the sea, has been arrested in Italy. Hyka, 45, was arrested Thursday at Borgo San Lorenzo, Florence province.
Hyka was sentenced by the Vlora district court with 25 years imprisonment for trafficking human beings.
Along with two other persons, also imprisoned, he organized an illegal traffic of scores of people who paid 1,500 Euros to be transported to Italy in speedboats. A speedboat with 36 persons on board had left the Vlora coast bound for Italy when bad weather caused the calamity.
