TIRANA, June 19 – The Interior Ministry said that 1.4 million Albanians had applied for the new identity cards which they could use for the June 28 elections as well as other services.
The process started in January and turned into a hot political issue.
The opposition accuses the government of failing on purpose to distribute them to the whole population, something that was immediately refuted.
The opposition also said the authorities were exploiting hundreds of thousands of non-passport holders, giving the new IDs only to those favoring the governing coalition and trying to ignore the others.
The government said there were some 730,000 non-passport holders.
They have yet to show how many have received the new IDs.
