TIRANA, Feb. 13 – The government Wednesday created 400 new positions for university professors.
This follows a significant increase in the number of enrolled students following the addition of new faculties and branches at Albania’s public universities. More students has resulted in a need for additional professors to cover the required lecturing and seminars.
Besides, Prime Minister Sali Berisha said that the university authorities should try to attract more graduates who have scientific degrees.
Berisha noted that public universities had only five percent of the total number of professors with scientific degrees, a figure which is five to seven times less than seen in other western countries.
The premier also urged universities to exploit the possibility for more ‘brain gain’ this year and also attract more Albanians who have graduated abroad.
There are some 100,000 students in public and private universities in the country, according to government figures.
