TIRANA, Aug. 9 – The government decided Wednesday to launch a 50 million euro international tender in the next days for the rehabilitation of the Fier-Vlora road segment. The bidding winner will be declared in 60 days. “That has been one of the main goals of the government program,” said Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
The government also said that another tender for the Korca-Qafe Plloc road segment would also be launched. It is expected that international financial institutions like the European Bank for Development are interested to fund that, according to a government statement.
A new road segment linking Kradhiq will Saranda also shortens to two third the link from the southernmost port town to the capital Tirana.
The World Bank would also fund some hundreds of millions of dollars for the rehabilitation of some 6,000 kilometers of secondary roads, according to the premier. Roads along the shore and other agriculture areas would be of priority in the project. Albania has some 18,000 kilometers of road and 3,000 kilometers are not asphalted. Berisha called this project as vitally important for Albanian farmers and one that would have a great impact in other services. The funding will be forecast in the new financial year for the World Bank and other international financial institutions, according to Berisha.
