TIRANA, Jan. 28 – The Government Monday approved a draft law on Gender Equality prepared by the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. This was the first law of this kind in Albania. Among other things, the bill stipulates that women should constitute at least 30 per cent of the Government authorities.
Integration Minister Majlinda Bregu is currently the only female minister in the Cabinet. During elections, a minimum of 30 per cent of the candidates in the majority system should be women, and proportional lists – from which 40 lawmakers are elected – have an equal percentage of men and women, so that at least 20 women enter the parliament. The draft law prohibits gender discriminatory job vacancies announcements.
