SHKOZET, Aug 20 – Defense Minister Gazmend Oketa said 1,309 tons of ammunition were moved from Shkozet to a safer place, the Borizana military depot. Oketa also said 25 tons of mortar shells were packed in 59 containers to be taken to Borizana.
Additionally, 25 tons of power have been destroyed.
The presence of the ammunition was made known by the local media after the March 15 blast at the Gerdec ammunition disposal factory which killed 26 and injured 300 persons. The government had previously tried to send the munitions to an Asian country, but the ship transporting the containers was stopped by Turkish authorities and turned back.
Albania has some 100,000 tons of excess ammunition from the communist regime, which it is prepared to destroy in the next few years.
