TIRANA, Oct 1 – Association of judges complained to the parliament Wednesday that a new law presented from the government was violating their independence.
The new draft law envisages that the top managers of the courts, chancellors, will have more competencies than at the moment, a move harshly opposed by the judges considering that an interference into their independence.
They believed courts’ managers and the judges would never be in unison and that would consequently affect negatively the normal working of the justice institutions.
Manjola Berberi of the association asked the parliamentary commission to suspend discussing on such a draft law.
The judges have complained to the Constitutional Court on the government decision on increasing competencies of chancellors. They asked the parliament to wait until the Constitutional Court gave its verdict before proceeding with the draft.
