TIRANA, Dec 7 – The opposition G99 political party called on Monday for the government to immediately withdraw its Environment Minister Fatmir Mediu from the Copenhagen Summit.
The G99 said it was shameful for the government to take Mediu to the summit. As a former defense minister during the March 15, 2008 blast in Gerdec he was called accountable for the lives of 26 dead persons and also distributing in the air much toxic waste from the blast, the political party said.
“That’s a shame Albanians do not deserve,” said spokesman Etjen Xhafaj. “[Fatmir Mediu] should immediately leave Copenhagen and also the government and open the way to the complete investigation of his involvement in Gerdec.”
Mediu was first charged with abuse of post but then released when he resumed parliamentary immunity following this summer’s parliamentary elections.
He was also chosen to be the environment minister in the new cabinet.
The opposition has blamed Mediu and also Prime Minister Sali Berisha for the blast.
