TIRANA, Jan. 26 – The “anti-mafia” law came into effect this week.
This law, which was approved last month from the parliament without the presence of the opposition, allows the seizing of assets whose legal origin cannot be proved.
The new legislation entitles authorities to seize suspicious assets and put the owners on trial to determine the source if they cannot prove the origin of their funding.
The law was adopted last month without the support of the opposition Socialist Party, which is boycotting the parliament claiming vote manipulation.
The opposition has also criticized the law saying it could be exploited by the government against its lawmakers or politicians in a selective way.
They also said the money brought home by immigrants is not registered, which represents an opportunity for authorities to abuse such cases.
