TIRANA, Feb. 16 – Environment Minister Fatmir Mediu, ex-defense minister, is to go to the Supreme Court March 1 to respond to the accusations of two persons who had committed injuries from the Gerdec ammunition disposal factory blast in 2008 which killed 26 persons and injured 300 others.
Alketa Azizaj and Roxher Durdaj have declined to pardon Mediu, who was defense minister at the time, and have asked the Supreme Court to start trial for lack of attention.
The Supreme Court will listen to their evidence and also the testimony from Mediu March 1 to decide whether they are to ask the parliament lift the immunity of the minister.
Following the blast Mediu resigned from the post and a few months later the parliament lifted his immunity.
Last year, after he was re-elected to the parliament and also nominated to the new cabinet, the Supreme Court canceled the charges against him – abuse of post.
Twenty-eight other senior army, defense ministry officials and private company owners and managers are on trial for abuse of post and mass murder.
Azizaj and Durda have opened or asked for a new process against Mediu after the other case was canceled.
