TIRANA, March 30 – British Ambassador Fiona McIlwham and Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport Ferdinand Xhaferaj opened an exhibition at the National Museum of History on the life and work of the renowned British scientist, Charles Darwin.
The Ambassador said that, “Darwin and his work provide a great example of the power and influence of science. His ideas continue to shape scientific research and public debate todayŮ And Darwin’s curiosity and passion to learn about the world around him is an inspiration to us all.”
Stressing the vital importance of science and innovation in tackling current global challenges, such as climate change and the spread of disease, the Ambassador said, “Scientists and future generations have a key role to play in providing innovative and new ways to protect and support our societies, to make them prosperous, healthy, and, importantly, sustainable. We are looking to future scientists – students here today – to develop innovative solutions to new challenges.”
Speaking to school children at the exhibition, she said she hoped that the exhibition “would inspire them to become new Darwins.”
The exhibition will be open from 29th March – 3rd April at the National Museum of History. It is sponsored by the British Council, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, and the Ministry of Education and Science. 24th November 2009 marked the 150th anniversary of the publication of “On the Origin of the Species”. 12th February 2010 marked the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth.
