TIRANA, May 30 – Both top political groupings running in the forthcoming June 23 national polls נthe governing Democrats of Prime Minister Sali Berisha and the main opposition Socialists of Edi Rama נbelieve and are working hard to bring as many Albanian immigrants as possible to cast their ballots in Albania on voting day.
Every week top leaders from both sides are visiting neighboring Greece and nearby Italy to convince their supporters, now living there, to come and cast their ballots June 23. Last week, it was opposition Socialist lawmaker Pandeli Majko who went to Greece while this week Democrats’ Parliamentary Speaker Jozefina Topalli did the same.
She called on Albanian emigrants staying in Greece to return home and vote for the ruling Democrats in June 23 general elections, accusing the Socialist opposition of efforts to block the country’s European integration, denying long years of full-time work and pension rights to thousands of Albanian immigrants in Europe.
Berisha also addressed the cheering crowd of DP supporters in Athens via video conference, pointing to the Albania’s progress over the past eight years, citing the country’s membership in NATO, development of major infrastructure projects, and construction of over 10,000 kilometers of roads, water supply systems, schools and hospitals across the country.
