TIRANA, Oct. 31 - The police arrested five people from Shkodra, Tirana and Malesia e Madhe on Wednesday, while one more person in being wanted, under suspicions they belong to a criminal group looking to smuggle refugees through the Albanian-Montenegrin border.

According to Shkodra police, an investigation that lasted several months proved the detainees have been helping foreigners from third countries, mainly Syrians, to illegally cross borders, initially in Montenegro and, then, towards EU countries.

The criminal ring provided the refugees accomodation and the means of transport, according to police sources. It activity was extended to Greece, Albania and Montenegro, turning into one of the widest groups in human trafficking.

Although the rates have dropped as opposed to previous years, the traffic of foreign nationals, mainly from Syria, has continued throughout this year. At least 150 foreign nationals have been detained by police in an attempt to illegally cross to Montenegro, assisted by individuals and domestic criminal groups who use Hani Hoti border crossing and, less, the Muriqan border crossing, to traffick their victims.
