MEICO, the state-owned weapons dealer, made a good start this year. A good year ruined, unfortunately, by that ‘technological’ explosion at Gerdeci demolition facility and the subsequent investigation. According to data from customs authorities, MEICO imported, on behalf of the Albanian government, 19 metric tons of weapons worth ALL 35 million during the first quarter of 2008. MEICO imported 42 metric tons of weapons and ammunitions worth ALL 24 million during the entire 2007.
The export of old and new Albanian ammunitions and weapons began again in 2008, after a long pause during 2007. In the first quarter of 2008, MEICO managed to export 91 metric tons of ammunitions worth ALL 25 million. In March 2008, just before its activity was closed down because of the Gerdeci affair, MEICO exported 6 tons of weapons worth ALL 10 million. (Tirana Times Staff)
