TIRANA, Oct 20 – The Albanian government has chosen various locations for specialized personnel to dispose of its excess ammunition.
The country has some 100,000 tons of excess ammunition remaining from the former communist regime.
Much of that ammunition was produced in the 1950s and 1960s and has become a serious concern for the post-communist country.
Following the explosion at the ammunition disposal company in Gerdec earlier this year, which killed 26 and injured 300 persons, the topic of disposing of out-dated ammunition became a serious concern for Albania and members of the NATO alliance.
The cabinet decided that eights sites would be used to dispose of ammunition in Puke, Bize, Librazhd, Gramsh, Skrapar, Voskopoje, Kelcyre and Durres.
The ammunition will be collected from the defense ministry and the disposal process will be held assisted by the interior ministry.
