TIRANA, Sep 1 – Muslims in Albania began observing, early Monday, the holy month of Ramadan, which takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.
The feast is celebrated by Muslims throughout the world, who do not consume food, liquids or tobacco from dawn until sunset during the entire month.
The Ramadan fasting is meant to bring believers closer to God.
“This month will prepare us to always be more humane and to be closer to people in need,” according to Selim Muca, head of the Islamic Community in Albania.
The Eid el-Fitr holiday, on September 30, marks the end of the fasting period of Ramadan.
Albania has a predominantly Muslim population, followed by the Orthodox and Catholic communities. There has been no data collected on religious ethnicity since before World War II.
Albania’s former communist regime prohibited religion from 1947 until it was toppled at the end of 1990.
Albania is well-known worldwide for its peaceful coexistence among its religious communities.
