TIRANA, Aug 25 – Albanians will be able to cross the Macedonian border without paying for a visa beginning in September.
The delay in eliminating visa payments was due to a technical mistake made by the Macedonian parliament. Skopje passed a law eliminating the need for visas for Albanians, following a conflict earlier this year when it wanted to only issue visas at its embassy in Tirana. There was a strong reaction from Tirana that also threatened to establish the same rule, causing hardships for Macedonians. Following that, the Macedonian government drafted a law that was passed by the parliament lifting visas for Albanians.
The new regulations were supposed to begin August 1, however, the new law was, by mistake, not included among the laws published in the official gazette. This problem will be resolved by the Macedonian parliament in August. (Tirana Times Staff)
