TIRANA, Nov 10 – The collapse of an apartment building in southern Albania killed 3 people, injured four and left unsheltered at least 13 families.
Rescue teams found the bodies of two women and a child Monday beneath the rubble of an apartment building that partially collapsed in southern Albania, police said.
Fifteen people were evacuated when part of the building collapsed in Gjirokastra, 140 miles (225 kilometers) south of Tirana, on Sunday; four of those were slightly injured.
Rescuers suspended their search Sunday night for fear the rest of the building might crumble. They found the bodies of the two women, one aged 65 and the other 35, when they resumed their search Monday morning, police spokesman Genti Mullai said.
The younger woman’s daughter, 12, was found later in the day, the spokesman said, adding experts were continuing working and to decide how to eliminate the threat of the remaining rubble and the half part of the collapsed building.
Mullai said the collapse was believed to have been caused by construction work on an adjacent apartment building.
A Greek search-and-rescue team also went to the scene.
The collapse occurred before noon Sunday in Gjirokastra, 225 kilometers south of the capital, Tirana.
Nine people were arrested after the collapse, all of them linked to the construction company building the other building next to the collapsed one.
Police and experts decided to tear down the remaining part of the collapsed building that had slid some meters from the original position due to the digging of new foundations of the adjacent building.
