TIRANA, Oct 14 – Interior Minister Lulzim Basha took part at a ministerial meeting of the Interpol held in Singapore.
The meeting was focused on the cooperation in the fight against organized crime and international terrorism and the role of the police forces in the United Nations peacekeeping missions.
Basha mentioned the ‘zero tolerance’ policy followed by his government in the fight against organized crime. The minister mentioned the fact that some 220 criminal organizations were destroyed in the last four years involving some 1,000 persons taken to the court.
He said that due to such a policy and commitment, and also the cooperation with international organizations and other countries, Albania has turned into one of the countries with the lowest indicators of crime, below the average of the European Union, in the region, “turning our country into the safest in the region.”
During the last three years some 500 Albanians have been extradited due to the close cooperation Albanian police have kept with Interpol.
Basha also spoke about Albania’s efforts to better manage the border. He said that an Albanian officer would be soon sent to be present at the Interpol center in Lyon, France.
Albania will host the regional Interpol conference in 2011.
Basha says Albania is most secure in the region
