TIRANA, Jan. 5 – British media reported that Lorik Cana, Albania’s national team captain, believes Sunderland has the quality and belief to end their 33-year wait for a major trophy this year, according to The Journal.
Cana reckons they are one of the teams that can consider themselves genuine contenders.
The Albanian captain already has knock-out success on his CV with a French Cup win for Paris Saint Germain in 2004 and back-to-back finals with Marseille in 2006 and 2007, but admits the FA Cup is a different proposition.
“I have never played at Wembley but I won the cup in France so why not try with Sunderland? We are in the top half of the Premier League so have the quality to have winning the FA Cup as a goal,” he said.
“I think we have a team that can go far in this competition, the draw along the way will be important. I know all about 1973 being the last time Sunderland won anything.
“This team can beat any team, it will depend on what draw we get in each round, and if we avoid injuries and suspensions. We have to keep focused on the league, but going as far as we possibly can in the FA Cup is a big deal to this club. It would be fantastic to reach the final.
“But you never know, you could play against other Premier League teams, other Championship teams and they are good as well. We just have to focus on ourselves and try to give our best.”
The competition remains the focus of debate over whether it has lost its luster, but in Cana’s eyes it retains all its romantic appeal
