TIRANA, Sep 29 – Following strong contradictions referring to its politicization made from the opposition, non-governmental organizations and also students themselves, the Ministry of Education made known that the history text of the 12th grade is going to be rewritten in all the disputed areas, adding that would be made with all other text if necessary.
Minister Myqerem Tafaj said that all mistakes in the textbooks would be corrected “within the year.”
Opponents had said since last week the text was historically inaccurate and politically influenced when it refers to the 1997 pyramid schemes crises in Albania, which led to a short period of anarchy, as “a communist revolution orchestrated by the Socialist opposition”. It presents former Socialist governments as extremely corrupt, while claiming that the current centre-right government of Prime Minister Sali Berisha, which came to power in 2005, “ushered in a new era” for the country.
During the communist regime of former dictator Enver Hoxha, textbook were all covered from the communist ideology, something which Albanians remember quite well less than two decades later.
Berisha himself also denounced the textbook and called for its revision.
