TIRANA, Dec. 9 – The Constitutional Court began on Tuesday a review of the legality of a territorial agreement with Greece, which delineates the continental shelf between the two countries in the Ionian Sea.
The agreement, signed during the visit of former Greek Premier Costas Karamanlis earlier this year, was appealed by the opposition Socialist Party which claims that the government is handing Albanian territory to its neighbor for unclear political benefits.
The agreement has sparked controversy in the local media which has accused the Albanian government of giving 225 square kilometers of its territorial waters to its southern neighbor
The government denies that.
Meanwhile its ratification by the Parliament was first postponed and then set for an indefinite time as the parliament must wait for the verdict of the Constitutional Court.
