TIRANA, March 23 – Albanian Foreign Minister Ilir Meta said that the draft law on the National Intelligence Service will be reviewed by the European Union and NATO to ensure the highest standards.
Upon his return from the USA, Meta said that any changes or improvement of the draft will be done in close consultations with the European Union and NATO.
“I believe that because the present law is outdated, and taking into account the very important changes Albania has undergone, such as the Constitution, but also because of the challenges that Albania faces today, and NATO at the same time, those of terrorism and wider, naturally, another look and improvement of the Law is needed. This will of course be done in close consultations with all our international partners. First of all, with the EU, in which we want to adhere, and with NATO, where we adhere as members,” Meta told journalists.
Washington and also other western European governments expressed concern about the draft law saying it gave many powers to the prime minister and violated the intelligence service’s independence.
It was not clear the details that contradicted NATO and its members but it was clear they feared the draft law. One may think that could have to do with any classified information.
Albania is a NATO member country since last year.
