SHKODRA, Nov 3 – Diana Bejko, an environmental official in the northern Shkodra city, warned that Montenegro would likely be the source of serious pollution of the Shkodra lake after some industries have been authorized to dispose of toxic chemicals there.
Bejko said an aluminum factory now disposes of its remnants into a river feeding into the lake.
“That is really dangerous pollution Ů surpassing by many times the limits set by the European Union,” Bejko said last week.
Other disposal areas also find their way into rivers linked to the lake.
The environmental official also appealed to Albanian authorities not to allow illegal construction along the lakeshore, and to prohibit illegal fishing in its waters.
The Shkodra Lake is the largest in the Balkans with some 368 square kilometers of territory.
