TIRANA, Feb. 22 – Recent heavy rain and snow caused another fear in northwestern Albania that flooding could return to their area.
Authorities have put the army on alert, fearing new floods in the country’s north following heavy rainfalls and melting snow.
Some 3,000 hectares of agricultural land was already flooded Monday, according to the agriculture ministry.
Several other countries in the region are also facing flood conditions.
The Albanian power corporation started to discharge water from two hydro-power plants on the Drini River last weekend after danger levels were reached.
Interior Minister Lulzim Basha said the government was prepared to cope with another flooding.
In January the same area in the region of Shkodra was hit by the worst flood in decades, causing an estimated 4.2 million euros in damage to private property affecting some 4,200 families.
