TIRANA, Oct. 12 – Izet Haxhia, the former bodyguard of Prime Minister Sali Berisha who has been sentenced in the murder of a Democratic Party lawmaker was released from custody in Turkey.
The local media reported the news based on family sources but that was neither confirmed nor denied by government authorities
It was said that the Turkish Supreme Court released Haxhia after deciding not to extradite him to Tirana.
Haxhia is sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for the death of Azem Hajdari in 1998.
Haxhia had left the country, and he was arrested in Turkey in 2006 following an international arrest warrant issued from the Albanian Interpol and legal authorities.
If confirmed the case would be a first, since Turkish courts have never refused an extradition request by Albanian authorities.
