TIRANA, Feb. 8 – Nikolin Jaka has been reconfirmed as the head of the Tirana Chamber of Commerce and Industry for another 4-year term. Elections to select the new members of the Assembly of the Chamber and its new chairman were held from February 5 to 6.
Jaka won by a landslide of 45 votes to 8 against his only competitor Ylli Xhaferri. Speaking after his election, Jaka promised the Chamber would remain a strong voice of private enterprise and a strongly lobby local and central government bodies to protect business interests.
Jaka, a former deputy Transport Minister became the highest Albanian official found guilty of corruption-related charges in more than 15 years in 2007 when he was sentenced to one year in prison. In July 2009, an appeals court found Jaka innocent after being convicted of influencing a public tender.
