TIRANA, Sep 9 – In an effort to convince doctors to return to medical practices in remote areas of the country, the new health Minister, Anila Godo, threatened to revoke the medical licenses of doctors unless they return to serve in areas they had been assigned to.
Doctors now prefer to come to major cities to work at hospitals there, leaving empty their posts in rural areas.
Officials say Tirana has become a gathering place for these doctors and there are, now, more than are needed there.
In a series of meetings held throughout many districts, Godo said that doctors should work in towns and villages where they come from, or their licenses will be revoked.
The new minister pledged to launch a redistribution of doctors to cover the entire country.
The ministry has also offered financial incentives for doctors working in remote areas, but it seems that has not attracted their attention.
