TIRANA, Jan. 20 – The Albanian government on Wednesday created the National Nuclear Agency as a juridical institution depending to the prime minister.
The agency will prepare, follow up the maintenance and development of the nuclear programme in the country, said the government decision.
It is not clear what is the nuclear programme in this tiny Balkan country.
But it known that Prime Minister Sali Berisha has made it public his interewst in the likelihood of building a nuclear reactor in the country trying to turn it into a small energy superpower in the region.
That has seemed as a very far away dream taking into consideration that Albania is a poor country, which has still to really install democracy and the rule of law.
But it is also known that the country relies almost totally on the production of electricity on its hydropower stations that are often affected by droughts causing long or repeated power cuts.
Naturally Tirana would first have to convince the itnernational institutions it is appropriate to shelter, host a nuclear ractor. Then it needs to find the money which are billions of euros. And then a proper contractor to build it.
The Vienna-based international institutions is aware of that, according to government sources. Tirana has said that it has let that institution know about such an idea.
There is still nto any formal request for that as the country needs to adopt all the required legal acts ont hat.
Meanwhile there have been voices that Italy may be interested in building a nuclear reactor in Albania. That’s a way to calm down Italian voices of any danger on their soil. But there has been no formal confirmation on that.
While finding the money is still far to think of.
Meanwhile Albania should first try to maintain its hydropower stations, the environment and take care they do not cause more floods like the recent one.
