TIRANA, Jan. 6 – Albania’s electronic and postal communications operator, AKEP, has announced tenders on the award of new 3G and 4G licences in a bid to extend the third and fourth generation technology countrywide.

“The 2600 Mhz frequency band will give new operators the opportunity to offer the 4G services and existing operators to extend their geographical coverage,” said AKEP.

The electronic communications watchdog has set a price tag of 1 million euros for the award of a 15-year 3G licence in a tender scheduled for February 15.

AKEP has also announced a 4G tender for March 10 when it plans to award six licences at a price tag of Euro 520,000.

Last September, three mobile operators in Albania have launched the 4G mobile service catching up with the high-speed communication trend.

U.K.-based Vodafone Albania, Turkish-owned ALBtelecom/Eagle Mobile and the newly re-branded German-Greek Telekom Albania (formerly AMC) have all launched the service after they were granted licenses for a total amount of 23.5 million euros in a tender held last March.

Plus Communication, the smallest and only Albanian-owned operator which hasn’t been able to launch its 3G services yet, did not participate in the tender.
