TIRANA, Nov 10 – The main opposition Socialist Party said Tuesday that the new draft law on starting an investigation on the property of anyone even though he may not be charged is against the country’s constitution and violates human rights.
The governing Democratic Party-led coalition has offered a draft law that allows police and prosecutors to start an investigation on any person who may be considered a suspect on their sources of income.
That is another effort the country is making to please Europe along its efforts to get the visa free regime and also be accepted as a candidate for the EU.
That was clearly said by Democrats’ spokeswoman Erla Mehilli who reminded the Socialists that was one of Europe’s requests. She also said that was a law applied in many other European countries.
Damian Gjiknuri of the Socialists said the draft law left free space of abuse to police and prosecutors. He said that there is no guarantee it would not be improperly-exploited in this ever constant politically squabbling country.
Albania expects good marks from Brussels and hopes to get the visa free regime next year.
It has also applied for candidate status and is still expecting consideration from the European Union council of ministers.
