ATHENS, Greece, Dec 2 – Hundreds of Albanian immigrants gathered to protests in front of the building where the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe was holding its annual summit in the Greek capital.
The immigrants were supporters of the Albanian opposition Socialist Party asking for an investigation of the June 28 vote.
The immigrants asked for the transparency of their vote.
“Don’t tell us to bow our heads to the vote injustice,” they chanted.
Albanian foreign Minister Ilir Meta was also present at the summit, as a member of the new cabinet. Meta’s Socialist Movement for Integration has joined the Democratic Party-led cabinet of Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
The Socialists insist that a considerable number of ballot boxes should be recounted.
The opposition won 66 in the 140-seat parliament together with one ally.
The Democrats and their allies won 70 seats and the remaining four seats were taken from Meta’s LSI.
The OSCE/ODIHR report said that Albania did not fully meet international democratic standards especially criticizing the fact that counting was done in a bad or very bad way in one-third of the counting centers.
But the international community has urged the opposition to return to parliament, which they have boycotted, and resolve the problems there.
