TIRANA, Aug 12 – The Socialist Movement for Integration of Ilir Meta, part of the leftist coalition, appealed to the leader of the main opposition Socialist Party, Edi Rama, to reconsider joining the coalition with them, broken apart after April’s constitutional amendments were passed by Parliament.
Meta has accused Rama of collaborating with the governing Democratic Party’s Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, and damaging the opposition’s prospects for next year’s general elections.
The amendments changed the voting system into a regional proportional system, which leaves little room for smaller political parties, like the SMI, to run alone.
The SMI has invited the Socialists to again sit down to discuss the electoral reforms that are still to be completed in parliament.
The same answer has also been sent by the Socialists, turning the issue into a wordy clash that will result in nothing if the two leaders do not agree to accept each other.
The SMI is also expected to ask for a no-confidence vote on parliament Speaker Jozefina Topalli, a move that was initiated some months ago by the Socialists, but not supported by other smaller parties.
