TIRANA, Jan. 21 – Parliament approved, by unanimous vote on Monday, new amendments to the Criminal Code on the exploitation of children. According to these changes, proposed by Majlinda Bregu, Minister of Integration, the sale and exploitation of children for labour or pornography are now recognized as criminal acts punishable with either imprisonment sentences and/or fines.
“The sale of children is a new phenomenon that should be included in the Criminal Code and treated as a criminal act. Their exploitation for pornography [purposes], particularly internet child pornography, should be equally considered,” said Bregu, who argued that the new legal sanctions would afford greater protection to children in the country.
