TIRANA, June 12 – Parliament Speaker Jozefina Topalli said Thursday that the parliament would discuss and vote on the immunity of former Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu next Monday.
It is very likely Mediu’s immunity will be lifted as all the political parties have agreed to do that. Mediu, who resigned in March after the Gerdec blast which killed 26 persons and injured 300 others, has said he made the move for moral reasons adding he felt no legal or formal responsibility on the explosion.
Mediu has tried to involve and blame the army officials as well.
Prosecutor General Ina Rama has asked the parliament to lift Mediu’s immunity so that he may be accused of abuse of post and negligence. Some other ministry officials and owners of the private factor dismantling the ammunition in Gerdec have already been arrested. (Tirana Times Staff)
