TIRANA, Oct. 8 – Mjaft! Non-governmental organization launched Wednesday a petition asking for the removal of Foreign Minister Lulzim Basha from his post in order to be investigated over alleged abuse of post and corruption in the Rreshen-Kalimash road international tender.
Basha was stripped of his parliamentary immunity last December.
The opposition has accused him of being biased and profiting from the international tender when he was transport minister.
The road segment is being built from the U.S.-Turkish Bechtel-Enka group.
Its cost started at 418 million Euros but it has already gone up to more than 540 million Euros.
A recent report of a transparency auditing commission said its cost would go up to one billion Euros.
The opposition also accused Basha of being involved in illegal business ties with Damir Fazlic, the Bosnian businessman who was detained last weekend, then released, for alleged corruptive acts.
The NGO said that Albanian citizens could not bear to have as their top diplomat a person who is being investigated by the justice institutions as it is heavily damaging the country’s image.
