Police arrest Albanian trying to smuggle heroin to Greece

TIRANA, Jan. 23 – Tuesday police arrested an Albanian found with 10 kilograms of heroin while he waas trying to cross into neighboring Greece. Perparim Guce, 44, was arrested Tuesday afternoon at Kakavie border crossing point, 250 kilometers south of Tirana, after 10 kilograms of heroin were found in the spare tire of his Mercedes car trying to cross into Greece, according to police. Three days ago police arrested two other persons transporting 41 kilograms of cannabis sativa to another border crossing bound for Greece. Albanian authorities have stepped up efforts to crack down on organized crime, trafficking and corruption in the impoverished ex-communist country of Albania, which aspires to one day join NATO and the European Union.
Police found in a flat in Tirana 33 packages of cannabis in a bag but they arrested no one.In another operation police arrested Fredi Tahiri, 34, for selling heroin at Qemal Stafa Street in Tirana. Albert Ciku, 27, was arrested also for drug trafficking he sold to high school teenagers.
