TIRANA, Aug 13 – Police claimed they have achieved considerable success in destroying some 81,000 cannabis sativa plants around the country, though Albania remains a major producer of the drug in Europe. Police said the cannabis plants have been cut in Shkodra, Gjirokastra, Vlora, Kukes, Durres, Berat, Fier, Korca and Dibra and have arrested 21 persons while 15 others remain at large. Police said they would continue the fight, monitor the country by helicopter and also arrest those responsible.
Last year, police confiscated some 7,100 kilograms of cannabis and claimed only 100 kilograms had managed to cross the Albanian borders. This year, there have been only four kilograms discovered being smuggled over the border.
