TIRANA, Oct 15 – Prosecutors investigating the causes of the March 15 blast in Gerdec at the ammunition disposal factory, which killed 26 and injured 300 persons, want to question Swiss Heinrich Thomet and also the U.S. AEY company owner Efraim Diveroli.
It seems that investigators consider their proof as fundamental in concluding on the causes of the March 15 blast near capital Tirana.
Former Defense Ministry senior official Ylli Pinari, AlbDemil owner Mihal Delijorgji and his manager Dritan Minxolli have been charged on mass murder, a charge that may take them up to life imprisonment if they are found guilty.
At the same time prosecutors have also questioned former Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu but have not charged him.
Businessman Kosta Trebicka who served as the main witness for the U.S. newspaper New York Times denouncing the arms scandal was found dead in a car accident last month.
Thomet served as a mediator arranging the arms sale from Albania to the Afghan army.
Diveroli has been accused with many charges in the United States for buying Chinese ammunition for the afghan army, a move considered illegal there. He as paid $298 million from Pentagon for that contract, though he did not receive all the money.
The Albanian AlbDemil company not only disposed of ammunition but also allegedly sold it to AEY. Investigation on the ammunition sale has been included in the case as well.
