TIRANA, Nov 16 – Helping countries in South-Eastern Europe implement a UN Convention on public access to environmental information and justice was the purpose of a two-day regional workshop for high-level judiciary officials being held in Tirana under the auspices of the OSCE and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
The event, the second of its kind, brought together high-level judges from South-Eastern Europe with leading international experts. Participants exchanged views, shared experiences and discussed the application of the UNECE Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters.
The workshop aimed to help enforce the Convention, particularly provisions meant to give the public access to justice in environmental matters.
The Convention grants the public and associations representing the public access to environmental information and justice as well as the right to participate in environmental decision-making.
