This book is the result of the collaboration between Albanian and Spanish experts on the topic it tackles. After a general introduction by the Ambassador of Spain in Albania, Manuel Montobbio, the book focuses on two thematic axes: the relationships between Skanderbeg and the Kingdom of Aragon, including the contribution of Albert Torra, Deputy Director of the Archive of the Kingdom of Aragon and Anila Bitri Lani, Former Ambassador of Albania in Spain, and the parallel experience of the Sephadim and the Arb쳥sh, offering the perspective of MarAngeles Gallego, Researcher of the Superior Council of Scientific Research, Eva Hyskaj, Professor at the Faculty of History of Tirana University and Anton Nik롂erisha, Professor on Albanian Language and Literature at the University of Calabria.
“If Skanderbeg was also for all Europe the symbol of resistance of Christianity against the Ottoman onslaught, to Alfonso the Magnanimous their alliance was one of the decisive elements to ensure that Mediterranean would remain to be Mare Nostrum for the Christians, through a strategy developed in three fronts: the defence of Albania and the Morea treaty through military and economic assistance to their rulers in exchange for their allegiance, and the contribution to the defence of Constantinople.
After the Treaty of Gaeta, signed between Alfonso and Skanderbeg in 1452, troops commanded by Bernat Catalan Vaquer were installed in Kruja. Thus Alfonso sent Ramon d ‘Ortafࡴo protect territories inhabited by Albanians, to accompany and support the struggle of Skanderbeg. The Magnanimous policy responds to this deep yearning that Mediterranean led to the expansion of the Crown of Aragon: a yearning that led to the four bars to wave at Acropolis after the saga of the Almogavars. A desire to be incorporated as an essential component after the call from outside of Spain, from Lepanto to the to-dates birth of the Barcelona Process, which first has returned to make our-bonded in a single forum for all states and peoples he lived in the Mare Nostrum”, said ambassador Montobbio.
