TIRANA, Dec 15 – Albania received four million dollars donated from Spain through the UN Fund for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which aim at improving food security and child nutrition.
The joint program will be implemented by the Albanian Ministry of Health, Agriculture and the municipal authorities, who will be supported by several UN agencies.
As confirmed by sources from the Ministry of Health, this initiative will pay particular attention to the most needy strata of society and improve the nutrition of children and young people in Albania, one of the poorest countries in Europe.
The project will also support the struggle of the Albanian Government to eradicate poverty, reduce child mortality, the highest in Europe, and improving maternal health.
Recipients of aid are five districts in the impoverished mountainous northern area of Albania as well as two slums on the outskirts of the capital, populated mainly by Roma.
The Spanish government has donated a total of $15 million to Albania under the MDG Fund through a package of programs related to sectors such as culture, tourism, employment, health and migration as well as through the implementation of the plan of internal reforms of the United Nations “One UN”.
