STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Dec. 22 – Sweden’s Supreme Court said it would not extradite Zylfie Haklaj, a 45-year-old Albanian woman convicted in absentia of killing two men in her homeland.
The woman, if extradited, might not be afforded adequate protection by Albanian authorities, the Swedish high court ruled.
Haklaj was convicted in Albania in absentia in 2002 and sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing two men to avenge a relative’s death.
The woman, who claims she is innocent, has remained in custody in western Sweden since her arrest by Swedish police on an international warrant last April.
The woman has said she would be “tortured, humiliated and finally murdered” if sent back to Albania.
