TIRANA, June 10 – Granting parliamentary immunity for former defense minister Fatmir Mediu, being investigated for his role in the March 15 blast in Gerdec which claimed 26 lives and injured 302, continues to cause infighting between the prosecutor general’s office and the parliament.
Prosecutor General Ina Rama has asked parliament to lift Mediu’s immunity so he could be sued for abuse of post. However, parliament has insisted they need more documentation to prove that charge.
At the same time, the opposition in parliament says the request for more documents is a delaying tactic by the governing Democrats and their coalition allies, the Republican Party, whose leader is Mediu.
Following that, the prosecutor general’s office sent four volumes with documentation to the parliament, after being accused of trying to hide evidence from lawmakers.
It is very likely the parliament will decide, before the end of its session in July, to lift Mediu’s immunity, as everyone has said, including Mediu himself.
