TIRANA, March 8 – Monday, March 8, Women’s Day, celebrated all over the world, including Albania.
Tirana’s streets were filled Monday with groups of women going to restaurants, coffee bars and getting or buying flowers despite the gloomy weather and rain.
Many activities were held in the capital convening officials and also international institutions and personalities insisting on the importance of women’s roles in the development of the world and Albania too.
Last week the Regional Women’s Lobby for Peace, Security and Justice in Southeast Europe held a strategic meeting of its Steering Committee in Tirana to discuss key policy issues and recent political developments in the region.
The women expressed concern over the weakening influence of women politicians and leaders in the region and called on the European Union and local leadership to focus on the empowerment of women in democratization processes in the region.
The region of Southeast Europe is in the midst of a difficult economic crisis. Solutions to this global and regional crisis must include a role for women. The regional cooperation of women in all sectors is critical for the economic crisis to be overcome and contribute substantially to speed up EU integration, they said.
