TIRANA, April 15 – Due to high production costs that were not supported by the sale price of energy lead to the closure of the Fier thermo power plant. The decision was taken by the government wit the expectation that a potential concession can revitalize the facility in the near future. The technology used was outdated and the facility has been listed in the strategic category to be privatized. The plant was used at maximum capacity during the energy crisis and thus its amortization was worsened by unlimited use. There is not bid date yet though firms from Austria, Germany, Czech Republic and USA have expressed interests about it. The plant has had several problems including provision of fuel as its primary material. The plant employed 220 workers which are now left at economic assistance until the concession is guaranteed.
