Land of the Eagles, Riding through Europe’s Forgotten Country, is the title of one of the newest books describing experience of travel in Albania, freshly out of the prints of I. B. Tauris Publishers, London. Over the last centuries Albania has been a picturesque, though not a highly frequented destination. Horseback travelling has been one of the “specifics” of travelling in Albania.
Robin Hanbury-Tenison, accompanied by his wife Louella Hanbury-Tenison, renews the experience in to-day Albania and authors an interesting book. They have ridden on the hoof-proofs of English Romantic poet Lord Byron, who started his renowned Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage while he was travelling in Albania at the beginning of the XIXth century. The authors have also been inspired in their travel paths by later itineraries of British limerick-writer and aquarelle painter Edward Lear and anthropologist Edith Durham.
Robin Hanbury-Tenison has been awarded the Patron’s Gold Medal by the Royal Geographical Society. It was at the Royal Geographical Society that he and his wife presented the new book on Albania on the 13th of July 2009. Their travel was completed in 2007. Robin and Louella Hanbury-Tenison have also made a film to record their memorable trip in Albania, titled Albania, Land of Eagles.
