TIRANA, April 11 – Albanian President Ilir Meta reacted on Tuesday to the Freedom House report saying Meta is perceived by many as a corrupt figure.

Tedi Blushi, a spokesperson for the president’s office, expressed regret that the report is misused to serve the country’s one-sided political agendas.

“If Freedom House is truly interested into shedding light on corruption in the country, it should impartially investigate who influenced and ordered truth and facts deformation in this report and we are convinced it will then discover the true symbols of national and international corruption,” the official statement said.

According to the democracy assessment made by the independent watchdog for 2017, one of Albania’s steps back in establishing a strong democratic system was the election of Meta as the country’s president despite his public perception as the “symbol of corruption.”

The spokesperson’s statement concluded by saying that “in a forced and one-sided way this report not only deforms the truth, but in speculative and intentional ways it also seeks to create artificial focus.”
