Hurricane Harvey: Twenty Albanian families in Houston left homeless

TIRANA, Aug. 30 – The devastating Hurricane Harvey that hit the U.S. city of Houston last weekend and its deadly flooding has also affected the small Albanian community there, Albania’s Ambassador to the U.S. Floreta Luli-Faber has announced.

In a post on social networks, Ambassador Luli-Faber there have been no fatalities among the 500 to 600 Albanian families that live in Houston, but some 20 households have been severely affected losing everything they owned.

“Houston is all flooded. The storm risk is not over yet. The Albanian community there although relatively small in numbers, is composed of 500 to 600 households,” wrote the Albanian ambassador.

“From contacts with the authorities, we have learned that there have not been any fatalities among Albanian families. I have contacted with the leaders of the Arberia Houston [the official Albanian community association in Houston] and I have been informed that at least 20 Albanian families have been severely affected by this natural disaster which has taken away their homes, cars and all their possessions,” the Ambassador said calling on the Albanian community to stay together and help each other.

Hurricane Harvey and the deadly floods that hit Houston have killed at least 20 people and left thousands homeless. Large parts of the city are still underwater following the most powerful hurricane to have hit Texas in more than five decades.

Some 200,000 Americans of Albanian descent live in the U.S. while the number of Albanian-Americans who permanently live in Albania is estimated at 20,000.

The U.S. has been a strategic partner in Albania’s Euro- Atlantic integration and a key donor in the country’s transition to democracy and market economy.

Albania’s affection to the U.S. started after World War I when former President Woodrow Wilson stood up to support Albania’s independence to prevent any further partition of Albanian territories.

The two countries re-established diplomatic relations on March 15, 1991, after a break of 52 years following World War II and Albania’s isolation under communism.

President George W. Bush was the first sitting American President to visit Albania on 10 June 2007.
