TIRANA, July 3 – The Greek media reported that two Albanian fugitives have been shot dead in western Greece following a major manhunt for a gang of five Albanian armed robbers who broke out of a prison in March.
A statement from the national police said the two were killed in a fire fight with police special forces shortly after nightfall Tuesday in a mountainous area near the city of Agrinio, which lies about 300 kilometres west of Athens.
They were Edison Lika and his uncle Flamur Lika.
The fugitives broke out of Trikala prison in central Greece on March 22, after accomplices from the outside attacked guards with grenades and automatic weapons. The five escapees also are suspected in a subsequent bank robbery and the murder of a police officer last month.
